GEORGE SILVERS POOR FARM OVERSEER
contributed by Birdie Silvers Daum
George Silvers, my grandfather, was the overseer of the Moultrie County poor farm, prior to 1890. The poor farm was located west of Sullivan, and was purchased by Moultrie County officials in 1864 for $5,800. My grandparents and their six children, one of whom was my father, Elmer Silvers, lived there. Although discontinued as a "poor farm" the land is still owned by the county and the county receives income from it in a landlord-tenant operation.
